How to choose a perfume without smelling it first

Start with the scent family you already enjoy, then check the notes and the concentration.

Scent families

• Fresh and citrus: bright, clean and light. Browse Fresh and citrus.
• Floral: built around flowers such as rose, jasmine or violet.
• Sweet and vanilla: warm, soft and comforting. Browse Warm and vanilla.
• Oriental and amber: rich and warm, often with resins, spices and vanilla.
• Woody and oud: dry, deep and warm, built on woods and oud. Browse Woody and spicy.
• Leather and tobacco: dark, smoky and distinctive.

Season and occasion

• Fresh and citrus fragrances usually feel best in warm weather and during the day.
• Warm, vanilla, amber and woody fragrances usually suit cooler weather and evenings.

How to read the notes

• Top notes are the first impression and fade first.
• Heart notes form the main character of the fragrance once the opening settles.
• Base notes remain the longest and give depth.

Concentration

Eau de Parfum (EDP) and Extrait de Parfum contain different levels of fragrance oil. Extrait is the more concentrated of the two. The concentration of each perfume is listed on its product page.

Test on skin

A fragrance smells different on skin than on paper. Wear it for a few hours and notice how it develops from the top notes to the base.
